SAR Cash Counter for Saudi Riyal Notes and Coins

The SAR Cash Counter totals Saudi riyal cash using the exact face values in the reviewed SAMA-backed definition. Sort notes and coins into physical groups, enter whole non-negative piece counts, and verify each subtotal before moving on. The calculator uses integer halalas, and the denomination table is built from the same data rather than a separate editorial list.

The ordinary set includes both one-riyal cash kinds

The default note rows are SAR1, SAR5, SAR10, SAR50, SAR100, SAR200, and SAR500. The default coins are 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 halalas plus SAR1 and SAR2. SAMA's Sixth Issue page, accessed 29 August 2026, documents the coin family and the current gray SAR200; its fifth-issue security material continues to identify the SAR1 banknote.

A one-riyal note and one-riyal coin produce the same value, but they are not the same physical item. Keep their quantities separate so the Cash Count can be compared with the actual note stack and coin group. Similarly, a paper and polymer SAR5 share one note row: SAMA's 4 October 2020 announcement said both would circulate together from the following day.

TheCashCount does not authenticate Saudi currency. Use SAMA or a commercial bank's official verification route when a piece is doubtful, and keep it out of the completed inventory until the cash-handling decision is made.

SAR20 is optional because it is commemorative, not retired

SAMA's Special Issues record includes a 1999 centenary SAR20 and a 2020 G20 SAR20. The G20 announcement dated 24 October 2020 says the note would circulate from 25 October as an official legal banknote alongside current currency. That supports one Legacy row for both designs.

Legacy makes an unusual face value available only when a physical SAR20 is present. It does not mean the commemorative notes are souvenirs or retired, and it does not imply that SAMA issued a regular sixth-series SAR20. Their occasion and artwork differ; their kind and face value do not.

The older brown SAR200 and current gray note share one row

The special-issue record also shows a brown centenary SAR200. SAMA announced the gray Vision 2030 SAR200 on 24 April 2021 for circulation from 25 April as official legal tender. Both pieces belong in the default SAR200 note row rather than creating colour-based subtotals.

This is different from a lifecycle conflict. If official guidance withdraws a particular design in the future, the supported currency data must be reviewed before it remains in a current row. Today, the cited sources support a shared face-value treatment for these documented SAR200 issues.

A coin payment limit does not limit inventory arithmetic

The in-force Saudi Arabian Monetary Law dated 31 December 1959 treats SAMA notes and subdivisions as legal tender but says no one must accept subdivisions above a total of SAR10. A cash drawer can still contain a larger coin balance. The calculator records that physical inventory without promising that the coins must be accepted together to settle one payment.

SAMA says the official Saudi riyal symbol was approved on 20 February 2025. The production formatter uses its U+20C1 character and supplies a visual fallback when a host font has not caught up. This display change does not alter the hundred-halala minor unit or add any cash denomination.

For a repeatable close, count from SAR500 down to one halala, inspect each subtotal, then compare the final Cash Count with Expected Cash. Recount a physical group when the drawer is Over or Short instead of adjusting an entry to manufacture the expected result.

The worked example combines two SAR500 notes with three one-halala coins. The official-symbol total of 1,000.03 is generated at render time from 100,003 halalas by the production calculator and formatter.
